The Hyūga clan is popular in the Land of Fire and, more specifically, in the Hidden Leaf Village where most of its members reside. They are best known for their dojutsu, the Byakugan, which is a rare kekkei genkai passed on to those within the bloodline. Sometimes called the All-Seeing Eye or the White Eye, the Byakugan is a rare type of eyesight which allows the recipient x-ray vision, long-distance vision, chakra sight, etc. Due to internal strife within the clan's founding members, however, the clan was broken into two families -- the Main Family and the Branch Family. It was only over time that the Main Family began to develop their own fighting style known as the Gentle Fist based around the Byakugan's ability to see chakra. Although rarely a Branch Family member would learn the Gentle Fist on their own, it was a highly coveted ability.
Even later, a curse seal was developed that could trap dojutsu within the dead body of a clan member. This jutsu was used on the Branch Family, as a tool during times of war to cut down on the number of Byakugan stolen due to the death of Hyūga soldiers. After the Third Great Ninja War, the Branch Family came to despise the curse seal which also gave the Main Family power over their brain's pain receptors. Although open conflict was not engaged, thanks to certain sacrifices, the Branch Family grew more resentful and weary of the Main Family with each passing year until the concept was abolished by Naruto Uzumaki, the Seventh Hokage.
Now the Hyūga clan exists as a single unit and tensions have mostly dispersed over the years. Although there are still a few in descendants of the Main House who seek the old ways, they are few and far between. Now the Hyūga clan has experienced great prosperity after the Fourth Great Ninja War and have grown to be one of the biggest clans in the Leaf Village. As dissatisfaction grows in the minor nations, however, many of the Hyūga clan have been sent to investigate and train to fight on the front lines if it comes to war. The clan elders fear that if the Leaf Village goes to war then it could be much of their own family who could perish. Therefore, the Hyūga have been trying as hard as possible to control the peace in the minor nations. [/ul]
